Hydro-extension

We are leading the hydrology real-time system development. Based on the early version of WRF-Hydro, we wrote a new model framework with a self-learning function to improve model performance.  A lot of new functions have been added to satisfy various user applications.  It is the only available hydrology modeling system, which can provide a reliable high resolution real-time forecast. We provide professional services to install and support the real-time system with the following available features: river flooding, overland flooding, city flooding, water management and related downstream impact, storm surge inundation, water resource estimation and prediction..

We have developed a container that encapsulates all the essential environments and have formulated a workflow to execute a real-time system for retrieving weather data and executing both weather and hydrology models. This system can be effortlessly deployed on various platforms, including laptops, Macbooks, servers, and cloud environments. Here are the three real-time systems  available to users:

  • Data Retrieval and Weather Information Extraction: Users have the capability to download weather model data and extract weather information for specific locations, such as cities.
  • High-Resolution Weather Information Generation: The system empowers users to generate high-resolution weather information by executing the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model.
  • Flooding Information Generation: Users can also generate flooding information by running the hydrology model.

Summary of the unique features in hydro-extension.

Functions/PackageHydro-extension
NestingCoarse grid domain or upper streamflow can provide the boundary input to a fine mesh grid domain.
City/Residential area floodingThe new land routing scheme has the capability to predict the overland flooding for city/residential areas.  The city urbanization feature has been added and can simulate/predict the city flood providing the guidance for urban construction or flooding risk estimation.
Water management functionThe model has a dynamic reservoir discharge scheme. The future discharge plan and its impact can be simulated. The lakes/reservoirs can be created either manually or through the ARC-GIS tool.
Data assimilationA new data assimilation scheme, which modifies the streamflow conditions from both upstream and downstream watersheds.
Storm surgeAdd the ocean boundary to allow the water moving from ocean/river to land, reflecting the storm surge related inundation.
ContainerSupport different platforms
Flooding risk estimationCapable of estimating the flooding risk based on the hydro dynamic process from either real cases or estimated precipitation.
CompressionThe technique provides an extra 20 to 30 times compression ratio after the regular compression. Available for funded projects only.
SedimentCode developed by LSU as a collaboration.
River geometryThe new functions provide the land and river interaction, including the prediction of overbank flooding.
WRF and WRF-Hydro couplingThe river flow information is consistent between the fully coupled run and offline experiment. The river feedback provides additional boundary layer features to the atmosphere model.
